Mahashivratri 2025

Mahashivratri is a Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Shiva, celebrated annually on the 14th night of the lunar month of Phalguna (February–March). It holds great spiritual significance as devotees observe fasting, perform night-long vigils, and chant prayers to seek blessings from Lord Shiva.
 

Significance of Mahashivratri:

1. Marriage of Shiva and Parvati: It is believed to mark the divine wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
2. The Night of Cosmic Awakening: Devotees stay awake, meditating and chanting, symbolizing victory over ignorance and darkness.
3. The Day Shiva Drank Poison: Mythology states that during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), Shiva consumed poison (halahala) to save the world, and his throat turned blue, earning him the name Neelkanth.
4. Spiritual Enlightenment: Many believe that observing Mahashivratri with devotion leads to moksha (liberation).

How is it Celebrated?

• Fasting: Devotees observe a strict fast, consuming only fruits, milk, or a simple satvik diet.
• Rudrabhishek: Special prayers and offerings of milk, honey, bael leaves, and water are made to Shiva Lingam.
• Chanting Mantras: Devotees recite "Om Namah Shivaya" and other Shiva mantras for divine blessings.
• Jagran (Night Vigil): People stay awake all night, meditating and engaging in bhajans and kirtans.
